Also known as: Banganapalli x Alphonso Hybrid, IIHR Hybrid

Arka Aruna is an exceptionally high-quality hybrid mango variety developed at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Bengaluru. It is a controlled cross between Banganapalli and Alphonso, specifically bred to combine the large size of Banganapalli with the superlative flavor and buttery texture of Alphonso.
Physically, Arka Aruna is a large mango, typically weighing between 400 and 500 grams. It has an attractive, symmetric oval-oblong shape. The skin is smooth and ripens to a beautiful, uniform golden-yellow, often developing a very light, attractive blush near the shoulder when exposed to direct sunlight.
The flavor profile is rich, sweet, and highly satisfying with a pleasant, mild aroma. The pulp is a deep yellow, firm, and meaty. It is 100% fiberless (none), offering a smooth and melting texture that closely mimics its Alphonso parent while providing much more volume per fruit.
The Arka Aruna season is mid-season, typically starting in May and peaking in June. It is cultivated primarily in South India, particularly in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Its resistance to 'spongy tissue' and its large fruit size make it an extremely attractive choice for modern commercial orchards.
When comparing it to its parents Banganapalli and Alphonso, and the related hybrids Arka Puneet and Arka Anmol, Arka Aruna is essentially the 'super-Alphonso' of the IIHR series. While Banganapalli is large but milder, Arka Aruna brings the intense richness of Alphonso to a much larger fruit. Discover more IIHR hybrids at our Mango Identifier hub.
Post-harvest, Arka Aruna has a good shelf life of 8-10 days at room temperature. Its firm flesh and sturdy skin provide superior resistance to bruising and transit damage, allowing it to be shipped to distant markets. It is a top choice for fresh table consumption, premium retail displays, and for making high-quality mango slices and pulps.

Developed to provide a large-fruited alternative to Alphonso that is completely resistant to the physiological disorder 'spongy tissue'.
Highly valued by growers for its 'regular-bearing' habit and high yield potential in Southern India.
Quick reference for identifying common healthy vs. problematic conditions:

Pro Tip: Surface spots like Anthracnose are often harmless to the fruit inside, while Bacterial Canker or Stem-end Rot usually require discarding the fruit.
Ensure your Arka Aruna mango is naturally ripened. Use Food Guard to detect Calcium Carbide and other chemical ripeners.
