Also known as: Alphonso x Banganapalli Hybrid, IIHR Puneet

Arka Puneet is a highly successful premium hybrid mango variety developed at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bangalore. It is a controlled cross between Alphonso and Banganapalli, designed to merge the superlative eating quality of Alphonso with the high productivity and disease resistance of Banganapalli.
Physically, Arka Puneet is a medium-sized mango, weighing between 250 and 350 grams, with an attractive oval shape and a smooth, thin yet strong skin. When fully ripe, the skin turns a spectacular golden-yellow, accented by a very distinctive, eye-catching red blush near the shoulder.
The flavor profile is exceptional: intensely sweet, rich, and aromatic, closely mimicking the premium flavor of its Alphonso parent. The pulp is a deep orange-yellow, incredibly smooth, melting, and completely free of any fiber (none). It has a total soluble solids (TSS) reading of 19-21° Brix.
The Arka Puneet season is mid-season, beginning in early May, peaking during mid-to-late May, and finishing by mid-June. It is cultivated across the Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur districts of Karnataka, with growing acreage in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
In comparison to Alphonso, Arka Aruna, and Arka Anmol, Arka Puneet is smaller and rounder than Arka Aruna but offers an even more intense Alphonso-like aroma. While Alphonso is highly susceptible to the devastating 'spongy tissue' physiological disorder, Arka Puneet is completely free of this defect.
Arka Puneet possesses excellent storage and transport characteristics, maintaining its firmness and color for 8 to 10 days at ambient temperatures and up to 20 days under cold storage. This superb shelf life makes it highly prized for domestic premium markets and air-freighted exports.

Arka Puneet was bred by the pioneering scientists at IIHR, Bangalore, under the ICAR hybridisation program, representing a landmark achievement in modern Indian fruit breeding.
It was specifically developed to provide a viable commercial alternative to Alphonso that is completely resistant to spongy tissue, safeguarding growers from catastrophic crop losses.
The name prefix 'Arka' refers to the River Arkavathi, near which the IIHR Bangalore research station is situated.
Quick reference for identifying common healthy vs. problematic conditions:

Pro Tip: Surface spots like Anthracnose are often harmless to the fruit inside, while Bacterial Canker or Stem-end Rot usually require discarding the fruit.
Ensure your Arka Puneet mango is naturally ripened. Use Food Guard to detect Calcium Carbide and other chemical ripeners.
