How to Inspect Henna for Purity
Natural henna is safe and medicinal, but "Black Henna" often contains PPD, a toxic chemical that can cause severe skin reactions.
1. The Stain Progression Test:
Natural henna takes 24-48 hours to reach its peak dark reddish-brown color. If a henna paste stains your skin jet black in just 30 minutes, it contains toxic PPD or synthetic dyes.
2. The Aroma (Smell) Test:
Natural henna powder and paste have a distinct, pleasant, earthy, herbal, or grassy scent (similar to dried hay). Synthetic henna often smells like chemicals, ammonia, or petroleum.
3. Texture & Consistency Check:
When mixed with water/essential oils, natural henna paste is smooth, stringy, and viscous (stretchy). Synthetic pastes are often grainy, watery, or have an unnatural "gel" like consistency.
4. The Safety Patch Test:
Apply a tiny dot of paste behind your ear. Natural henna feels cool and soothing. If you feel immediate itching, burning, or redness, wash it off instantly - it contains harmful chemicals.
5. Sizing & Packaging:
Natural henna powder is usually a dull brownish-green. If the powder is bright green (added color) or jet black, avoid it.
