Coconut

Coconut palms are vital plantation crops in tropical coastal regions. Frond yellowing and crown distortions are typical signs of major deficiencies like Potassium and Boron, or deadly fungal bud rots.

Confused about plant symptoms? Nutrient starvation can mimic aggressive fungal blights. Check our Symptom Disambiguation Guide to tell them apart.
Soil pH Alert: Many deficiencies are chemically locked due to soil acidity or alkalinity. Read our global Soil pH Interaction Guide to check if you need soil correction before applying fertilizers.
Nitrogen Deficiency
Moderate Severity

Nitrogen Deficiency

Nitrogen Deficientia

Key Visual Symptoms

Lower older fronds turn pale green to yellowish-green. Frond count and overall crown size decrease, and the leaflets emerge shorter and thinner.

Organic Remedy
  • Grow cover crops like Calopogonium mucunoides or Pueraria phaseoloides in the palm basin.
  • Apply organic green manure and well-composted organic waste around the palm basin.
Chemical Correction
  • Apply Urea (1-1.5 kg per palm/year) in split doses (pre-monsoon and post-monsoon).
  • Top-dress with Ammonium Sulfate to supply nitrogen and sulfur together.
Potassium Deficiency
Severe Severity

Potassium Deficiency

Potassium Deficientia

Key Visual Symptoms

Older fronds turn bright orange-yellow. Pinnae (leaflets) show yellow spots followed by marginal scorching and dry, necrotic tips. The crown size is severely reduced, and the trunk tapers significantly near the crown ('pencil point').

Organic Remedy
  • Incorporate organic coconut husks, coir dust, and wood ash in a 2-meter radius basin around the trunk.
  • Return composted crop residues and fronds back to the soil basin.
Chemical Correction
  • Apply Muriate of Potash (MOP) at 1.5–2 kg per palm/year, split into two doses (May-June and Sept-Oct).
  • Ensure balanced nitrogen fertilisation, as excessive nitrogen worsens potassium hunger.
Magnesium Deficiency
Moderate Severity

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium Deficientia

Key Visual Symptoms

Older fronds show bright golden-yellow margins while the center of the leaflet and midrib remain green. This forms a prominent green 'V' pattern on the yellowing leaf blade. Leaves exposed to full sun show the most severe symptoms.

Organic Remedy
  • Apply dolomite limestone (1-2 kg/palm) to correct soil acidity and supply magnesium.
  • Incorporate well-decomposed organic manure mixed with magnesium-rich compost.
Chemical Correction
  • Soil apply Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt) at 1–2 kg per palm/year in split doses.
  • Foliar spray young palms with a 2% Magnesium Sulfate solution for rapid greening.
Boron Deficiency
Severe Severity

Boron Deficiency

Boron Deficientia

Key Visual Symptoms

Leaflets fail to split normally, emerging fused and curled into a characteristic hook shape ('hook leaf' or 'bayonet deformity'). The crown becomes distorted and flat-topped. Developing nuts crack, secrete gum, and drop prematurely.

Organic Remedy
  • Apply borated organic compost to palm basins during land preparation.
  • Avoid over-application of calcium/lime, which immobilizes soil boron.
Chemical Correction
  • Soil apply Borax (Sodium Tetraborate) at 50-100g per palm/year in split doses around the basin.
  • For young palms, spray 0.1% Borax solution onto the foliage.

Coconut Diagnostic Guide: Diseases vs. Deficiencies

Palms turning orange-yellow can signal potassium starvation or destructive Bud Rot. Distinguish them early.

Pathogen Spotting
Coconut Bud Rot
Potassium Starvation
Nutrient Starvation
Potassium Starvation
Key Indicators to Look For:
  • Symptom Symmetry: Potassium deficiency causes symmetric orange-yellow spotting across older leaflets. Bud rot randomly attacks the central spear leaf first.
  • Trunk Shape: Severe potassium deficiency results in a characteristic 'pencil-point' tapering of the trunk near the crown. Diseases like Bud Rot do not change trunk geometry.
  • Nut Drop: Boron deficiency causes young nut drop with deformed, cracked nuts. Bud rot causes general premature nut fall as the entire crown decays.
