How to Inspect Green Peas
Green peas are frequently treated with Malachite Green, a toxic textile dye that is carcinogenic.
1. The Water Soak Test:
Take a handful of peas and soak them in a bowl of water for 30 minutes. If the water turns greenish or has a color tint, it indicates chemical dye presence. Natural peas will not color the water.
2. The Wet Cloth Rub Test:
Take a few peas and rub them vigorously with a wet white cloth or tissue. If green color transfers to the cloth, it's a clear sign of Malachite Green dye. Natural peas won't leave color stains.
3. The Cooking Test:
Boil the peas. Natural peas turn olive-green or dull green when cooked. Chemically treated peas retain an unnaturally bright, fluorescent green color even after cooking.
4. Visual Inspection:
Natural peas have slight variations in color (some darker, some lighter). Chemically treated peas look uniformly bright green, almost fluorescent.
Safety Tip:
Always soak peas in salted warm water for 30 minutes and rinse thoroughly 2-3 times before cooking to remove surface chemical residue.
Quick Safety Tips
- Perform water soak test - dye will color water
- Wet cloth rub test for color transfer
- Cook and check if bright green persists
- Soak in salted water 30 mins before use
